10 Free Things to do in New York

New York, just the name of this city energizes many. If you happen to visit NYC, here’s a list of 10 free things you can do.

1. Central Park: Central Park is one of the landmarks of NYC. All parks are free but all parks are not the famed Central Park. Central Park was built in Manhattan to boost real estate’s back in the 1860’s. The park has many events, strawberry fields and people thronging; a kaleidoscopic site to behold!

2. City Hall: City Hall park located in lower Manhattan is home to New York’s government since 1812.

3. Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT): Located in Seventh Ave, 27th Street, Garment District, Midtown west. This Institute is like the fashion hub of the world and have garments dating back to the 18th century. (That’s as old as America!!). It is America’s first fashion gallery. Fashionistas, don’t miss this place!

4. Federal Reserve Bank of New York: Located in 33 liberty street, lower Manhattan. To visit the bank you better make reservations at least one week in advance. This place is worth a visit for its high vault security gear and the feeling that you are standing near 100000 tons of gold buried beneath you, make your hair stand. There are also various exhibits on counterfeit bills and coin collections.

5. Grand Central Partnership Walking Tour: Two historians come together at 120 Park Ave, 49th st Midtown east to give a free 90 minute walking tours every Friday at 12:30pm. This is an award winning tour, no reservation needed and it takes you to some of the great architectural sites of NYC like Chrysler Building, Grand Terminal, Pershing Square and etc.

6. Hispanic Society of America Museum & Library: Opened in 1908 it contains the largest collection of 19th century Spanish art and manuscripts outside Spain. It also has a library of more than 600,000 rare books and manuscripts (All the bibliophile out there- don’t miss this place). The Museum also has a substantial collection of El Greco, Goya and Velazquez.

7. Public Boathouse Kayaking: If Kayaking and water sport is your thing don’t miss the public boathouse in Downtown Boat House or Long Island Community Boat House in Queens. Get the gear going and explore NYC the old English way- Kayaking.

8. Staten Island Ferry: Staten Ferry has been around since 1905. It is free and is one of the prominent free attractions in Eastern Seaboard. It cuts across New York Harbour where you can see the sight all visitors never miss when they are in NYC. The Statue of Liberty.

9. Old Stone House: A Breuckelen legacy from Brooklyn Dutch Legacy. Located in Washington Bryne, 3rd st, 5TH ave, it is a replica of a Dutch Farm House by Robert Moses. There is an exhibit of The Battle of Long Island with weapons, clothing and other items.

10. New York Earth Room: This is for those who love the quirky and different things. If you are one of those who love the smell of earth after a whip of rain this place is for you. The Earth Room is Walter Maria’s Art Installation in the year 1977. A single room filled with 280,000 pounds of ….?? Yes, you guessed right- Dirt !!! Earth dirt mixed with the scent of wet forest. A unique room indeed.
